Noise Reduction by Image Averaging

At a recent trade show, I was talking with an enthusiast about noise levels in night photography. We were talking about various ways to mitigate noise, and the conversation invariably turned to Frame (image) Averaging.

I remembered seeing an outstanding article on the subject, but for the life of me, couldn't remember where. So, with apologies for the delay, here's the link to the article by Sean McHugh at Cambridge in Colour. Whilst you are there, cruise his galleries - the images are gorgeous.

Not exactly in the forensic vein but interesting. Russell Brown also has some videos on this process.
